About Us
We are a founding team of creative people who want to showcase different perspectives of our new reality. Contrarium Magazine is a new digital publication that aims to explore the space between balance and instability--where we find ourselves in juxtaposition to how we feel; the Yin and Yang of existence in the 21st century. Through a collection of creative works, we hope to connect our experiences and fill a void in creative representation.
Contrarium Magazine aims to hold two opposing truths in one issue, to amplify the voices of every kind of person, and to allow safe vulnerability for our community. We accept submissions from everybody in the forms of poetry, prose, essays, and visual art.
Contrarium is a digital and print magazine that published its first issue in December 2020. The current issue is available to view here.

The Creators Behind Contrarium
Editor-in-Chief
Maya started Contrarium as a passion project inspired by the boredom, stagnancy, and anxiety she felt from the COVID pandemic. For the previous four years, she had been doing community organizing and event planning for various Jewish non-profit organizations, focusing primarily on adults in their 20s and 30s. She is currently a graduate student at Santa Clara University pursuing a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology on the MFT track with an emphasis in Health. In her free time, Maya loves to cook, read, binge serial podcasts, and be outside. IG: @mayaloooo |

Ashley is a marketing, communications, and graphic design professional. When she's not working, Ashley can be found in the Pacific Ocean in an outrigger canoe, on the front country trails of Santa Barbara when the forests aren't closed, or eating tacos at Mony's in the Funk Zone. She loves photography and editing in Adobe Lightroom, but loathes Premiere Pro. IG: @bowseatswag |
Community Outreach & Marketing Manager
Shana is an LA transplant who has spent the past four years in the Bay Area. Recently, Shana quit her PR agency job in SF to have a budget-friendly sabbatical. She spent her time volunteering in her community, attending the Climate Strike march in NYC, traveling, and spending time with loved ones. Shana believes her time is best spent doing things that make a positive impact, exploring nature while the earth is still habitable, and cherishing her time with her longtime partner and rescue dog Chip. Her hidden talents are singing on key, cooking great food, and having a spot-on BS meter. IG: @shana_nw |
Social Media Manager, Content Editor & Graphic Designer
Nicole frequently expresses herself through writing, photography, style and design, but hasn’t shared much of her personal work until now. As a Filipina Libra with fashion whiplash and a deep desire for admiration, her daily struggle is masking her overwrought perfectionism with a sense of humor. She lives in Portland, OR with her cat, plants, and roommates. IG: @yearofthesloth |
